As San Antonio rallies behind another championship run, thousands of fans will gather in one of the city’s most recognizable venues to celebrate the moments that bring communities together. What most people never see is the work happening behind the scenes to help keep those spaces safe, functional, and compliant as they evolve over time.

Large public venues are more than buildings. They are gathering places for families, fans, employees, and communities. Keeping those spaces operating safely requires ongoing collaboration between owners, design teams, contractors, code officials, and specialized consultants.

At PDI, we have had the privilege of supporting projects at one of San Antonio’s most iconic venues throughout multiple stages of its history. While we were not responsible for the venue’s complete original design, our team contributed during original construction through specialized testing and evaluations and has since supported more than 20 remodel and renovation projects through third-party plan reviews for Bexar County.

Why Large Public Venues Create Unique Safety Challenges

Large assembly occupancies come with complexities that extend far beyond traditional commercial projects. These facilities must balance operational efficiency, occupant experience, and evolving building systems while maintaining compliance with constantly changing codes and standards.

Some of the biggest challenges include:

  • Managing high occupant loads safely
  • Maintaining clear means of egress during renovations
  • Coordinating modifications to fire protection systems
  • Evaluating changing space uses and occupancy classifications
  • Maintaining operations while construction activities continue

Even small renovation projects can create ripple effects throughout a building’s life safety systems.

Why Renovation Reviews Matter

Buildings are not static. Venues evolve continuously through tenant improvements, technology upgrades, operational changes, and modernization efforts.

Each change creates opportunities and risks.

Third-party reviews help identify potential code impacts early, improve coordination among project teams, and support compliance before construction moves too far forward. This process becomes especially important in spaces where thousands of occupants may rely on those systems during large events.

For large venues, safety is not a one-time milestone. It is an ongoing process.

Supporting Spaces Built for Big Moments

One of the most rewarding parts of our work is supporting projects that directly impact the places where communities gather.

Whether supporting construction efforts, reviewing renovation projects, or helping navigate complex code requirements, our goal remains the same: helping create safer spaces for the people who use them every day.

As San Antonio celebrates another exciting chapter in sports history, we are proud to support projects that help keep those experiences possible.

Because behind every big moment is a lot of work that most people never see.
